If You Build It Will They Come?

Will They?
Remember when I said that I panicked?
The reason I panicked is because my phone number was incorrect and I thought that just because I had my very own website that people would swarm to it, try to ring me up and would not be able to contact me.
I Was Mistaken
Have you ever seen the movie Field Of Dreams? (I think that's what it's called.) In the movie, a man had a vision that said to him if you build it they will come.
The man's vision told him to build a baseball field in a town where it made no sense to build a baseball field because there was no chance that it would be worth the while.
The man entered into the area of serious self-doubt and thought that nobody would come, but the vision kept saying if you build it they will come.
He ended up building a baseball field in this little town and the people did come. They swarmed the little town, his mocking neighbors were surprised and his vision was complete.
Is it the same on the Internet?
I *thought* (I don't know why I thought this.) that if I built a website, that millions of people would come visit the very instant the site went "live".
I sat there in my chair at my computer desk looking at my website wandering how many people other than myself are visiting.
I checked my statistics program for a few days and came to the realization that I am the only one who is visiting my site. This realization was punctuated with deep feelings of despair and thinking that I got ripped off.
I Snapped Out of It
I began learning about how exactly to get website traffic by buying search engine books, Internet marketing courses, and memberships to private members only sites.
So far I have spent thousands of dollars on Internet marketing related products which has served to elevate my general knowledge about the subject.
What Did I Really Learn?
I learned that website ownership in and of itself and by itself contributes nothing to the process of driving traffic to a web site!
