How To Be In Control Of Your Web Site
When you select a web design company or a webmaster, make sure that you are in control of the web site.
Unfortunately, it happens all too often.
The client for one reason or another, wants to change web designers and suddenly discovers that the web designer owns the domain name (YourDomainName.com) and holds the web site hostage until additional fees are paid.
You wouldn't allow your real estate agents to place their name on the title deed of your property would you?
Likewise, you should not allow your web designers to register your domain names in their name.
The owner of a web site is the one who owns the domain name. For this reason, you should make sure the people you hire register the domain name in your name.
Evil Horror Story
The most recent case I discovered is where a webmaster placed his own advertisements on his client web site without permission from the client. Because the ads belong to the webmaster, he gets all the revenue.
The client goes on to say that the webmaster:
never allowed them to have any dealings with the site
The client also stated that the webmaster is guilty of reading client emails. And here is an exact quote from this client:
we are having a battle with him at the moment as our domain runs out soon and discovered he has registerd that in his name
I hate to say it but this person would not be having this problem if the domain name was not registered in the name of the webmaster.
In this case, the webmaster has the power. They have to be nice to him and persuade him to give his? domain name up!
For better protection, people should learn to register their own domain name and never allow the webmaster access to the domain name control panel.
