About This Web Site

This web site is dedicated to those who do not wish to depend on others to manage their web sites.

Let me tell you a story

It was about seven years ago when I got my first web site built for me. I was excited and could hardly wait for all those swarms of people to visit my site.

If you build it they will come right? Wrong.

The day had come and it was ready. I went to the site and discovered that there was a typo in the phone number. What will I do? Panic, that's what I did.

Immediately, the penny dropped

I realized that I would need to call somebody up to fix this problem or figure out a way to fix it myself.

Not knowing a thing about HTML or FTP, I proceeded to nut it out because I could not stand the thought of depending on others to make changes to my web site when they get around to it.

I use a Free HTML Editor to do edit all my HTML and I use server side applications to automate certain tasks (like writing and publishing this page).

What You Should Expect

I will attempt to dump my brain here on this site and share my experience with you.

You will discover some valuable resources that I use and the relationship between the resources and website traffic.

You will not be learning web design, rather, you will learn to design for the web.

You will learn web terminology so that when it comes time to outsource, you will know exactly what you are talking about because you will know what you really want.

Do Your Own Web Design Work

Did you notice a very important word in the above paragraph?

Work.

At the end of the day, you will pay with your time or you will pay with your wallet.

Lucky for us, we can begin at any level because all the tools required to get started are FREE. Yes that's right, Free. You can begin right now without forking out any cash.

It all depends on how time limited your project is. However, somewhere between Free and $$$$$, most people will find their comfort zone.

Where we are time-limited, we simply make up the balance by outsourcing, or buying a specific type of application which automates a process. An example of a process which can be automated is publishing web pages to the Internet.

Some people will lead us to believe that it is necessary to code each web page by hand, one at a time, or that we need to add fresh pages to the Internet with a web design program or that we need to have a brain like Albert Einstein.

This is simply not true, because the act of publishing *this* web page includes typing plain text in into a window, and when I am done, I will click the save button and the article will be live on the web and all the indexes and navigation menus will be auto-updated.

As time goes on, you *will* develop the need to automate or outsource certain jobs because some jobs are just far too boring, consume a lot of time or are far too technical.

In the early days however, it is a good idea to at least know how to build a basic web site so that if you get someone to build an automated site for you, you will know enough to keep you out of trouble.

To do this, you will need to learn how to edit basic HTML and transfer files to the Internet with an FTP program.

This way, you will not be dependent on others to do the simple jobs. You will also feel more in control of the situation and feel a quiet sense of self satisfaction.
